Spitalfields Market and Hackney

Hello again everyone!

Today was my first actual, proper 'day out' in a while. The new people, Troy and Shannon moved in yesterday, so finally I can get out and stop searching for tennants! Yay! So, my plan was to head up to Spitalfields Market (an arts & crafts market in east London) and then wander until I found other interesting things.

But, first of all, I'd like to point out that the BBC weather centre and I seem to have different ideas of what "sunny intervals" mean. They said this:

And I saw this:

Hmmm.... sunny intervals? fog? Silly BBC!! Either way, it was rather warm and pleasant, despite the fog, so I set out anyways.

I then headed down to Spitalfields Market to do some random shopping. While the things that were there were cool, like funky t-shirts and handmade bags, there wasn't a whole lot of booths open.I would imagine that come summer, this market will be awesome - especially when more booths are open.

In the meantime I had lunch at a noodle restaurant called Wagamama. I ordered the "Wagamama Ramen" and it was actually quite good. I got a huge bowl of noodles with chicken, a shrimp, some fried tofu, spinach, a peice of crab and some other unidentified stuff. It was filling and fairly reasonably priced.

After lunch, I started wandering around, just looking for interesting stuff. I headed north, basically just following a neat looking street after neat looking street. Eventually I ended up in Hackney, one of London's 'roughest' neighborhoods. I say 'rough' with '' because it wasn't the worst neighborhood I've ever walked through. It was certainly more run-down than other parts of London, but had a lot of interesting shops/bars and graffiti. I probably wouldn't walk through this area in the middle of the night, but during the day there was more businessmen about than hooligans.Although someone did build some sort of dragon/bird/gargoyle of scrap metal and perched it on top of this building. Hmmm...If I had been with someone else I would've made them stand beside this little thought-bubble and pretend to think something important, however, I was bymyself so you'll have to imagine me standing there.

Fortunately Hackney did have some upsides, like this adorable little street!

I could live on this street.

After walking aimlessly around Hackney, trying not to look TOO much like a tourist, I gave up and hopped a bus back to the London Bridge, where they had just unveiled part of the bridge last week. They are currently working on re-painting the whole bridge, which I guess it going to take over 4 years, since they don't want to cover the whole bridge up (the tourists would get angry).

You don't really realize how faded the old part was until you see the new part.

It'll sure look spiffy when its all fixed up, but sadly I won't be in London anymore to see the completed bridge.

Tomorrow there is a handyman comming over to fix out boiler (the flame keeps going out when we turn on the central heating), and then I have to do loads of laundy.

More pictures of other things to come later!

Wow

Yep, okay, I've been a blogger slacker, I'll admit it. I worked so much during the festive season that I didn't really feel like blogging and since I've been unemployed I've been searching for a couple to fill our spare room. Now that we've 99% found that couple, I'm back to living a slacker life for a while which means, more blog posts for you! Yay!

I've still got a bunch of pictures and such that need posting from way back in December, so bear with me while we look at my Christmas photos!
This was taken Christmas morning. It is our lovely little tree surrounded by mountains of gifts! I'm glad he got to fufill his Christmas destiny. In fact, he is still guarding the living room as no one has the heart to pack him up. We'll just pretend he's now my birthday tree and leave him up until the end of the month at least.

Here is our lovely turkey pre-cooking. We bought a turkey that had no legs, in fact. It was a lovely 6 pounder (I think??) and just the right amount of food for us - not a huge amount of leftovers. He had a hollow chest cavity (wasn't stuffed) and so he cooked within an hour or so. We gave him a bed of veggies and rubbed him down with butter and herbs.

And about an hour and a bit later, here's how he turned out! Lovely and brown and crispy. I can safely say that this was an exeptionally awesome meal! If the turkeys weren't so freaking expensive I would be eating turkey much more often!

Nicole also bought a trifle mix box for dessert, so here she is posing with our trifle concoction made to order in a bowl. I did the sprinkles...

Sleeping In

I thought that this was a nice little picture of my room. And yes, the raditator is turned off, so don't worry - I'm not going to melt any books or light a fire.

I put up the stickers on the wall for a little decoration - I bought them at IKEA back in Calgary.

I don't work until 2 p.m. today, and its nice to sleep in and be lazy. At least for a little while. The house needs a really good clean but I just couldn't be bothered to clean it this morning. I'll have to do it Friday night I think. And laundry. I need to do more laundry. I'm such a slacker.

Work is going good. Its getting busier now at work and we're running out of more and more things. All we have in stock now is Pink Nintendo DS' and only about half the games that we need. We've got no Wii Fits and no copies of "Professor Layton and the Curious Village", which is the seasons hot new game. Its midly frustrating telling people over and over again that we're out of certain things. But again, sometimes I just want to ask people why they left it so late. Seriously. It's less than a week to Christmas. Slackers.

(On a side note, it seriously doesn't feel like Christmas. Where's the cold? The snow? Yeeeesh these English folk have it easy. I haven't even worn a winter coat in the past 3 days).

I actually had a minor argument (all in good humor of course) with the Scottish guy at work today. I told him that it was -30 C in Calgary over the weekend and he said that it couldn't get that cold. I believe his actual words were "if it was that cold your eyeballs would freeze". Siiiiigh. His hometown just borders Scotland apparently and he said that the coldest its been was -10 C with the wind chill. Yikes. Too funny.

Aaaaaaanyways. I've downloaded a couple movies and I'm going to curl back up under the covers and watch a movie before heading off to work.

Christmas Season

The Christmas Season is upon us, and actually, I can't believe how fast it is happening. The fall seemed to crawl by, however, now that I'm working time is flying.

And yes, that is my little Christmas tree. The little knit hats came off of bottles of juice you can buy in the supermarket, and the rest came from my favorite 'doller' store, Poundland! There are now more knit hats on it, as well as some paper streamers that the roommates added.

We had our office Christmas party on Wednesday night. It was a lot of fun, and we all had a good laugh. I got some chocolate and some bath bubbly stuff from my Secret Santra.... and I still don't know who it is haha.

However, since the office Christmas party I've been midly ill. I'm not sure if its something I ate or whatever, but I am going to pick up some medication today and hopefully come Monday/Tuesday (my days off), I'll feel better.

As a side thought, I've had 3 people in the last 2 days tell me that they like my accent, which I think is cool. Its funny since I don't think that I have an accent, but its also nice to have people that enjoy listening to you, even if its not for the content of what I'm saying.

On another side, it is pouring rain outside. Just POURING. More than I've ever seen here in London. And its blowing sideways. I'm hoping in the next 20 minutes before I have to head off to work its subside, although I doubt it.

I still don't know if I will be working at HMV in the new year. Some of the guys I chatted with said that basically what happens is that the company (depending on sales/staff), gets approval to hire a number of staff and they go from there. It's nice to hear that of all the temp staff, the regular staff have bets that I'd be the one asked to stay if we get clearance. I like being liked. Heh. However, I don't know yet whether they will ask any of us - given the whole 'economy' thing, I'm not sure if they'd get approval to hire any of us, and whether or not it'll be full or part-time. We'll cross that bridge when we get there, I guess.

I'm going to make tacos tonight, and I'm looking forward to it. :)

For now, I'm going to go get dressed and battle the rain to get to work.

Slacker!

Okay, okay, I know, I've been a blogger slacker recently. I haven't posted in 3 weeks and I'm sorry. On the other hand, nothing that exciting has happened! I've been working a lot, and the days that I have off are usually spent shopping and or laundrying/cleaning. Nothing too exciting.

Yesterday I spent my day off in London finding more parts to my work's secret santa for the staff party tonight. I also stumbled upon a german fair in Hyde Park and had a Wiener Schnitzel for dinner. Yum.

Other than that things have been low key. We're pretty busy at work and I have had the opportunity to pick up some extra shifts. It's been getting chilly here in the evenings but during the day it still hit highs of about 8 degrees. All my South African flatmates complain that its too cold all the time - whiners.

Anyways, for now I'd best head off to work. I promise there will be more posts to come!

Toasters and Toast

Okay, so here's a thought. English toasters only toast on one side. Yes, I think its funny, too. One side is all nice and toasty and the other side becomes soggy and sticks to the plate. Not cool. However, I put up with it, and even tried stopping the toast halfway and and rotating it.

Then our toaster semi-broke. Well, it still toasts, but the handle thing doesn't stick down, so you have to hold it down for the duration of the toast, which is annoying. However, you always get the perfect toast, so its got its up-side. (On a side note, I haven't yet e-mailed the landlady to determine if this is our responsability to fix or hers).

However, i've just given up. So I'm now doing my toast in my frying pan. I did burn the toast yesterday when I tired (there seems to be a 3 minute window of 'white-toast' and then about a 10 second window of 'well done' before it gets to 'burnt', so it can be a touchy science), but today it was much more satisfying.

Just a thought.

As well, my roommate, Rhi, is going grocery shopping this morning with the car, so she's going to drive me to work. 90p saved - Yay!

Days Off

Today and tomorrow are my scheduled days off, and HMV called this morning to ask if I wanted to come in and take a shift today and tomorrow. Yikes! I guess that's what I get for hoping for overtime! After some major thinking about, I decided to take a shift today, but not tomorrow. I will work 12-7 today, and will head into London tomorrow for some touristing.

I will do some laundry and shower before I go, and will clean a bit when I get home today. It would be nice to have both days off, and I could've said no to both, it wouldn't of been a big deal, but again, I have to remember that the point of this 6-week spell is to work, not to have days off.

I need to keep one day off a week though, just for my sanity. Hah.

So I'll be at work today, and hopefully will be in London taking photos tomorrow!

Family Guy

I sold a copy of Family Guy: Season 7 to a priest (father?.... I don't know what I should call him - but he wore a collar thingy) today. I found it midly amusing. Yes, I know that there is nothing wrong with it, but I still find the image of a priest going home on a Sunday night and laughing at the silly antics of Family Guy.

Autumn

I am watching with some amusement a team of Wandsworth City Workers drive a street cleaner up and down the streets of my neighborhood. This particular street cleaner seems to have the duty of cleaning the leaves off the sidewalks and roads, as there is a team of men with leaf blowers blowing leaves onto the vehicle's path.

Odd thing though... is that its rainy and windy outside, and so, almost like a cartoon, the trees are dumping their leaves back onto the road, pretty much directly behind the driver, rending him... well... useless.

So this is why I pay council tax...
