Oxford and the Cotswolds

Today I joined a dozen other people and trekked up to Oxford and through the Cotswolds with London Walks. It was a foggy morning but turned into quite a lovely, warm, sunny afternoon. I took tons of pictures and now that I'm home and looking at them, I've never been so pleased with the lot. Everything seemed to have worked today, so it's going to take me a while to sort them out and post them up. In the meantime, just relaaaax.

Salmon Crusted Tuna

I made sesame-seed crusted seared tuna with mashed yam last night. I'm enjoying the sesame seeds, but the tuna wasn't as good as the salmon was. I ended up drizzling soy sauce on the tuna to get some flavor. It was a bit dry.

I'll stick to salmon and steak for now!

Spider! Ahh!

So I was cleaning the bathroom a couple of days ago, and after scrubbing and bleaching like a mad person, I was just about to finish up when out of the corner of my eye runs this FREAKING HUGE SPIDER! The largest spider I've ever seen in real life.

And yes, I killed it. After I killed it, I took a picture. So... enjoy. It might be hard to tell just how big it was from the photos - but the body was about the size of a quarter (not including legs!). And it was a fast runner. Yikes!

And here's a close up!

Salmon nom nom nom

Today Tamryn (flatmate) and I headed down to Camden Market. We didn't get down there until about 2 p.m. - we wanted to make it a late day since she had a bellydance thing she wanted to go to at 7 p.m. Camden market was as packed as ever, but we had a lot of fun walking through the stalls. It's been a while since I went through the market in such detail - I usually hit my favorite stalls and move on.

I bought a new purse (oh hush), one that I'd been eyeing at a store at the mall where I worked - I was going to buy it a while back, but when I went to buy it they had sold out. It's brown and purple and lovely.

Tamryn bought some dresses, a skirt, and some scarves. She definitely cleaned up - finding some lovely items.

After that she headed off to bellydance thing and I came home to cook dinner. I had left some salmon out of the freezer since I bought the variety that said it shouldn't be frozen (uhhh....?), so I decided to cook it! I found a recipe for sesame-seed crusted salmon with yam fries, and I tried it, and it was soooo good. The sesame seeds on the salmon made it taste just awesome! I ate it before I thought to take a picture, so no picture for you, but man, I'm going to make that again tomorrow! (Edit: I've now added that picture!)

The weather is starting to get quite warm here - it was sunny and about 17C today - out in the sun it got hot! I'm looking forward to some lovely weather in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully it'll stick around long enough for you people!

Anyways, just thought i'd update the blog - it's been a while!

SUSHI!

So, today I made sushi! Yay! I got the idea to make my own sushi while at Waitrose, shopping for cleaning supplies. I went down the 'ethnic foods' aisle to get some more soy sauce, I saw a box of sushi rice and thought to myself 'I should make sushi!'

A quick visit to Chinatown to stock up on more sushi supplies found me spending 20 quid on the following:
  • 2 packs of seaweed sheets (10 per pack)
  • 1 box of sushi rice (will need to buy more, cheaper at the asian grocery store)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 bunch of spring onions
  • 1 pack of crab-sticks
  • 1 pack of salmon trimmings
  • 1 pack of pre-cooked shrimp
  • 1 huge bottle of soy sauce
  • 1 pack of chopsticks (can't eat sushi with a fork!)
  • 2 mini plates
  • 1 tiny bowl for soy sauce
  • 1 wooden paddle
  • 1 bottle of rice vinegar
  • 1 wooden bamboo rolling mat
  • 1 bag of sesame seeds
  • 1 packaged of unagi (seasoned eel)
I used the mini-table in our little kitchen and laid out all my supplies for the sushi making:

So far we've got a knife, a towel, cutting board, tub of water, sushinori, sesame seeds, soy sauce, avocado, sushi rice, rice vinegar, plates and chopsticks, a damp cloth, my bamboo spoon thing and my rolling mat. Yay! You'd best take a look while it's nice and clean, since it doesn't stay like this for long...
Oooh yes, look at that arrangement.
First off, I started by rinsing out 1 cup of sushi rice. Yes, I wrote down instructions off the internet and you can see those to the left.
I put 1 cup of sushi in the pot with 1 and 1/4 c of water. I will add less water next time, because the rice was slightly too wet. Left that to boil, the covered and let it simmer for another 6 minutes.
I then sliced up my slimy avocado (gross!), as well as the cucumber and some spring onions for good measure.
For fish I have some smoked salmon trimings (will buy whole salmon next time, the trimming were a bit too small), some pre-cooked shrimp and some fake crab logs.
So, after the rice cooled, I added 1/6 c of rice vinegar, 2/3 tbsp of sugar and 2 tsp of salt - miced it all together and got ready to go! I was making inside-out rolls (I like those better!), so I coated the outside of the rice with sesame seeds. I would've liked to use a bit of roe, too - but didn't see it at the store and I'm not sure I'd use enough roe to make it worth my while.
After that I flipped the sheet over, added the crab, avocado and cucumber and rolled it all together! The only hitch in my plan was that the knife we have in the house is horribly dull! Like, so dull I probably couldn't even break my own skin. Boo! So I may have massacred the sushi a bit trying to cut it, which was too bad since it looked so pretty as a log!

Either way I did manage to cut it, and made another roll of salmon and cucumber, which was also inside-out. I also made a couple little hand rolls of shrimp and a ball of rice, since I didn't think I could eat three whole rolls on my own. That's 6-8 peices per roll!
But, despite the auful cutting, they turned out rather good! The crab ones were my favorite, since the salmon bits were a bit odd. The shrimp were also quite tasty.
Don't mind the mess. Sushi-making is a complicated procedure, after-all. heh. Cleanup wasn't nearly as much fun as the making-of.
But all in all it was a very sucessful (and TASTY!) adventure. Next time I made sushi I will break out the eel, although I will definitely need a new knife. I'm sure I can get a cheap one at Sainsbury's, and then I can save it just for those events where I need a super-sharp knife.

Mmmmm unagi.

Anyways, I think this definitely beats eating out - price wise, although I can't do fancy things like dragon rolls or tempura - but for those everyday cravings I think I'll be making more sushi at home.

In fact, I'm craving some again. Maybe tomorrow...

Weekend and Wellies

I've had a lot more free time this past week, what with only working 1 shift, so I've been able to spend a lot more time in London!

Over the weekend I took my new housemate Tamryn to Portobello Road Market. As I'd already been there, I decided to bring the camera rather than the purse, since I don't always find things to buy there. Plus it was just a lovely day, and I can't pass up the opportunity to take pictures when the sky is so blue.
Tamryn had popped into a shop and left me outside to stare aimlessly at the little hotel across the street. It was quite lovely.
This little blue plaque was stuck on the wall on one of the adorable pastel houses along Portobello Road, yet I'd never seen it before. Usually I don't recognize the names on these places, they are all Duke of something or Lady whatever, but this time I knew who he is!
I just love the colors of these houses. So fresh.
You can tell its England - all these signs for beer! Heh.
After Portobello Road Market, we went to Westfield Shopping Centre, which is a huge fancy shopping mall in West London. We shopped and ate some fancy food, but I didn't snap any photos - frankly its not that exciting.

Sunday was a lazy day, I cleaned and loitered around. I had lunch at a pub with my housemate Andrew and his friend Lindy. After that I went for a walk through the park, where the sun was just starting to set.
We tried to feed the ducks, but I think their bellies were already full. They pretty much ignored us.
I spend most of Monday wandering through London. I started at my usual spot at Westminster Abbey, where I could't resist snapping yet another photo of Big Ben. I'm trying to mix it up, I swear!
After Westminster I made my way through Hyde Park, where the trees are just beginning to flower. It smells wonderful.
After that the sun started to set, so I made my way back home. I love all these flowering trees, though. I wish the trees flowered back home. Everything just smells lovely here.

Today was a lazy/cleaning day. I cleaned the kitchen and my room, and did a bit of laundry. Tomorrow I might head out for a bit, or I might kick around here and tidy some more. The possibilities are endless...

Next week I work at least 2 days, after that I'm done at HMV. I'm hoping to get out of the city once or twice especially while the weather is great. Not too hot, not too cold. Although I do need to find some wellies first. Who would've thought it'd be so damn hard?!

Photographers' Protest

3 or 4 weeks ago I attended a photography protest outside the New Scotland Yard in Westminster. They recently changed the law that now prohibits journalists and other photographers from taking pictures of the police. It's more complicated than that, of course, but people got all upset and decided to state a peaceful protest outside the police building.
I decided to stop by and see what was going on. Mainly it was just a bunch of people with cameras taking photos of pretty much everything.
Some of the protesters were quite young. Hee hee. This fellow was sitting on his dad's shoulders snapping away with quite an expensive camera. He seems to have a good handle of it.
More than anything it was amusing to see tourist buses drive by and watch the tourists go nuts because they assumed that we were taking photos of a celebrity or something, when it fact we were snapping away at nothing at all.

It was quite a boring protest, in fact, and I'm not sure it acomplished anything, but it was neat to see all the differnt cameras people had.

Now you've been caught up on all my photo-excursions over the past month or so, over the next week or so expect lots more posting!

Trafalgar Square

Well, you can definitely tell that summer is on its way here in Trafalgar Square because the street painters have shown up! There are all sorts of people who now spend their days making chalk drawings for (presumably) money. I didn't want to blantently take photos of the art, since most of the guys want money for the photos. I like to be sneakier.
And, really, I found the guys pile of crap a lot more interesting.
This is the new peice of art in Trafalgar Square - it's called 'Hotel'. It was originally called 'Hotel for the Birds', but they re-named it since they don't welcome birds in Trafalgar Square anymore.
Either way it is colorful.
It's all very pretty. Trafalgar Square is starting to get quite crowded now, especially in the weekends. I'm sure it'll be crazy busy come summer!

A mish-mash of things...

So, yes, it's been a while since I've seriously posted. However, with me not working again until next (that's right, next!) Friday, I have lots of time to wander around in London.

In the meantime, I'd like to offer some of the pictures I've taken over the last month that I never got around to posting:

This first bath are photos I've taken while walking in Wimbledon park. I like to spend my free time walking through here, and I also take the ends of my bread to feed the birds. It's a lovely park, and I'm sure it'll be packed on the weekends come summer.

Here's a tree that overhangs our little man-made (I think) lake where all the birds live.
And the dock. I'd like to sit on it and relax, but it's usually covered in bird crap...
A goose!

That's enough of the park. I've taken some videos, too, but I seem a have a huge amount of problems attempting to upload videos to YouTube, so you'll have to just imagine them.

Up next, Trafalgar Square!

Wow!

It's been a looooong time. Yikes. Oops. My bad. Heh.

Well, since February 12th, not a whole lot has happened. I spent a couple days in London, but spend way more days working. I've managed to pick up enough shifts to work almost full time the last 3 weeks which is great! It's certainly nice to have the extra cash for all you visitors this spring!

I'm sad to be leaving HMV at the end of March, and excited to return there in July - if matters allow. At the same time, I'm very much looking forward to being free and unemployed again to entertain you and travel all summer!

TnT (a local magazine for us 'antipodeans' or something) is hosting a travel show tomorrow, and I'm very much looking forward to heading out and seeing what kind of travel excitment is out there. After that I think I'll head into central London and check out a poncho I was looking at - we'll see - either that or head to Kensington with my flatmate Tammy to shop - who knows!

Either way, sorry that there hasn't been much posting recently, I'll step it up!
